A funny, wise and heartbreakingly true coming-of-age novel, I Was Born For This is a stunning reflection of modern teenage life, and the power of believing in something - especially yourself. Her father then gets her engaged to a young man she does not want to marry, but she agrees to spend time at the convent while awaiting her marriage. She is quick to fall in love, first falling for a farmhand who is later killed. They’ve lost infant sons and their youngest daughter, so Kristin is all they have. While the mother is reclusive and depressed, Lavrans is a successful and popular farmer and close to young Kristin. This is 14th-century Norway and Kristin is the daughter of Lavrans and Rangfrid. Instead, her life goes on and she seems to learn nothing from the damage she leaves in her wake. In fact, she is quite unlikable but with none of the redeeming qualities we may find in other failed people. In Sigrid Undset’s first volume of the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy, we find a young heroine who grows up to be so self-centered she is hard to like. So their initial meeting does not go so well. The man looked completely confused, so Ginger decided to take pity on him. “The Backwoods Barbie,” Willa chimed in angrily. “That, lieutenant, is the Smoky Mountain Songbird herself.” They catch him on a bad day as he is about to attend the funeral for a fallen officer. Their neighbor across the hall is Derek, a lieutenant police officer. They find an apartment and drag their meager belongings to their new home, including their beloved Dolly Parton statue. The book opens with Ginger taking a very large wad of cash that her druggie and prostitute mother had laying around, grabbing her seventeen year old sister and moving (hiding) from Nashville to Chicago. I laughed and laughed at the beginning and then the hero comes in with some of the most sexy dirty talk I’ve read in a long time. I’m so glad I’m a hussy for this cover because this book really surprised me. When I received the review request for this book, I have to admit I saw the cover and it caught my eye. At their best, such small pieces effectively capture a more innocent place and less cluttered time between the World Wars, when jocularity and a wry series of chuckles was all a reader ever needed. Tarkin was written by James Luceno, an author with a huge number of Star Wars tie-in novels from the Legends canon already under his belt, such as the intriguing-sounding Darth Plagueis. Tarkin was released in late 2014 and was one of the first non-movie novelisations or young reader Star Wars novels that were released in this new canon. I have read a lot of Star Wars books in 2019 and not only have I tried to stay abreast of the latest releases (for example, the latest Star Wars novel, Resistance Reborn) but I have also been checking out some of the older novels in the franchise (such as Thrawnand Death Troopers). This new expanded universe, which supplanted the existing expanded universe (which is now known as Star Wars Legends), has featured some amazing books which I have been really getting into in the last couple of years. Since early 2014, Disney has done an excellent job installing a new and distinctive expanded universe for the Star Wars franchise. In this week’s Throwback Thursday I check out an amazing and compelling Star Wars tie-in novel that focuses on a fascinating character from the franchise, with Star Wars: Tarkin, written by veteran tie-in author James Luceno. Reviewed as part of my Throwback Thursday series, where I republish old reviews, review books I have read before or review older books I have only just had a chance to read.
